Along with the beauty that it has become known for, one of the unexpected perks of putting up a Dori Pole on the waterfront is that it acts like a scarecrow. Put one on a dock or a raft and the geese, gulls and other wildlife tend to stay away. Read "Rippling in the Wind," special to Lake Life Magazine, which talks more about using Dori Pole as a goose poop deterent.
The use of Dori Pole Pennants at lake homes and cottages is growing rapidly in North America. And, lake home and cottage owners are among our favorite customers because they almost always seem to be happy! The fact is, why not?! They’re communicating with us about a fun, unusual product (Dori Pole) for a fun place to be (their lake home)! So, when we have the opportunity we ask them how they found out about us or what prompted them to order a Dori Pole. And, if possible, we ask for a photo of the pole or poles in action. See some examples below and also check out our photo gallery.

I bought one of your Dori Poles a few weeks back and took it to my cottage where it is mounted on the 8' x 8' swim raft, which is anchored about 100' off shore. In past years, the raft was used by ducks and geese as a latrine, so I didn't even bother putting the raft out last year. This year, so far, great success: not one bird has used the raft as a toilet! And the flag looks neat, fluttering in the slightest breeze. My cottage and the raft are about 160 miles north of Toronto.”

We saw the Dori Poles around Clark Lake, Michigan while visiting there and fell in love with them! There was one on the dock of the cottage we rented and we were told it was there to scare off the geese, which really appealed to us, as we have a goose problem here on Walnut Grove Lake. Then, the next day during a boat ride, we saw lots of Dori Poles in all the different colors and we all decided we had to get them. Now we have 6 flags on the lake and they look so festive!"

Dock Posts That Dori Pole Can Fit In

If your post has an interior diameter of 1-7/16" or more you can slip the Dori Pole into the post. We recommend that the Dori Pole go down onto the post at least 18" and we suggest that a hole be drilled at that 18" mark through the post and a horizontal bolt be placed through the post for the Dori Pole to rest on. Or, instead of the horizontal bolt you can put a filler of some sort, such as a broom handle, wood stick, plastic pipe, etc. to take up the space between the lake bottom and up to 18" from the top of the post.
If there is more than 1/8" total "play" in the dock post after the Dori Pole is installed we suggest that two bushings, such as our DP O-Rings, be placed onto the Dori Pole as shown in the photos. You can also use several wraps of electrical tape and so on. Place the top O-Ring or the top wrap of tape very close to the top of the dock post so that Dori Pole does not rub against the top of the dock post. If the Dori Pole is allowed to do so, it will wear and eventually damage the fiberglass.
One option is our Dori Pole Dockside Mounting Kit shown in the photos. This kit includes a 2" aluminum post (you specify 6' or 8' in lenth) with a through-bolt installed 18" from top, a DP Dock Bracket w/U-Bolt, and an "Auger" bottom piece to stabilize the mounting into the lake bottom. Also included are two DP O-Rings to be placed onto the Dori Pole bottom section to ensure a tight fit into the 2" post. The only items not included are the bolts or lag bolts that you will need to secure the DP Dock Bracket onto your existing aluminum or wood dock stringers (see photo).
To determine the length of the dock post (6' or 8') to include in your kit, we suggest measuring from the top of the dock surface down into the water to the lake bottom. Then determine how far you want this new post to stick up above the dock surface, such as 12". If your lake bottom is soft, you may want to add more to the post for better stability, say an additional 12". Try and match up your total measurements to one of the sizes we offer. Of course, you can determine how important it is to be exact or just "get close." You can always auger any additional post length that you don't want showing into the lake bottom.
